Vol. 514 No. 1

Written Answers. - Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

John Bruton

Question:

124 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the programme of research which Ireland is undertaking into emissions of greenhouse gas; if Ireland will commission a similar research programme to that commissioned in Scotland; and if she has satisfied herself that Ireland is using the most effective means possible, in view of the most advanced scientific knowledge, to reduce Ireland's contribution to climate change. [3607/00]

Overall responsibility for climate change issues is primarily a matter for my colleague, the Minister for the Environment and Local Government, who is currently finalising a national greenhouse gas abatement strategy. I understand that this report is underpinned by a range of research material.

In relation to the Scottish programme of research to which the Deputy refers, it is assumed that this relates to the scoping study on climate change which was published last month by the Scottish Executive. Given that primary responsibility for Ireland's response to the greenhouse gas issue is, as stated above, a matter for the Minister for the Environment and Local Government, it would not be appropriate for me to initiate a similar study.

In relation to the implications for business of the response to global warming, the position is that Forfás, which comes within the aegis of my Department, is currently considering research into this specific area.
