Vol. 514 No. 2

Written Answers. - Local Government.

Paul Bradford

Question:

100 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on the creation of urban councils or town commissions in the towns which do not have local authority structures. [3823/00]

The question of the establishment of new town local authorities was considered most recently by the commission on town local government whose report Towards Cohesive Local Government Town and County was published in 1996. The Local Government Bill, 2000, will provide the opportunity and context for discussion on the question of the creation of additional town local authorities bearing in mind cost, organisational and other relevant factors. Drafting of the Bill is at an advanced stage and it will provide a new statutory framework and legislative status for local government; modernise and consolidate local government law and generally underpin the programme of local government renewal.
