Vol. 514 No. 3

Written Answers. - Medical Practitioners Acts.

Bernard Allen

Question:

239 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has examined the implications of the Shipman case; and if he will update the Medical Practitioners Acts, 1978 and 1973, in order to prevent a similar situation arising here. [4411/00]

The implications of the case referred to by the Deputy will be taken into account in the review of the Medical Practitioners Act. However, the enactment of revised legislation will not of itself guarantee compliance in all situations. There will also be a requirement for constant vigilance, ongoing monitoring and upgrading of standards by clinicians and early reporting of adverse incidents by members of the public, so as to reduce, as far as possible, circumstances where malpractice can occur.
