Vol. 514 No. 3

Written Answers. - Mayo Sawmills.

Michael Ring

Question:

284 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the position regarding a sawmills in Cong, County Mayo, being taken over by Údaras na Gaeltachta; the progress, if any, made by Údarás to secure an alternative industry for the premises; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3977/00]

This matter is solely one for Údarás na Gaeltachta and Coillte Teoranta. However, I understand from Údarás na Gaeltachta that progress is being made with regard to locating an alternative enterprise or enterprises for the site; meaningful discussions are under way between certain business people, Coillte Teoranta and An tÚdarás; and no decision has been taken, as yet, with regard to the site being acquired by an tÚdarás.

I have asked Údarás na Gaeltachta to keep me briefed on developments in relation to this matter and I have urged them to consult with the local community regarding their proposals.
