Vol. 514 No. 3

Written Answers. - Job Creation.

Ulick Burke

Question:

84 Mr. U. Burke asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will confirm that only 133 additional jobs were created in the western IDA area in 1999 over and above the 1998 total of 10,758; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4217/00]

The supply of data on job creation in particular areas of the country is a day to day matter for the industrial development agencies.

Total employment in the west region in relation to IDA Ireland client companies in 1998 was 10,758 as per the agency's 1998 annual report, and preliminary results for 1999 indicate total employment in the same region at 10,885, giving an increase of 127 jobs.

The Government is committed to ensuring the most equitable distribution of job opportunities. The development agencies are now strongly focused on achieving this aim and resources are being deployed to reflect this new focus.
