Vol. 514 No. 4

Written Answers. - EU-India Summit.

Phil Hogan

Question:

54 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement outlining the issues to be addressed by the June 2000 EU-India Summit. [4286/00]

The Portuguese Presidency has indicated that it plans to intensify relations between the European Union and India and that it will organise the first ever EU-India summit meeting, at the level of Prime Ministers, in Lisbon on 28 June 2000. India has warmly welcomed the proposal. Portugal, as Presidency, and the Commission will represent the European Union at the planned summit. The agenda remains to be agreed and discussions on this will continue at official level over the coming months. I would expect that included in the agenda, in addition to a discussion of political and economic relations between the EU and India, would be regional issues in Asia and the pros pects for a future round of trade negotiations under the auspices of the World Trade Organisation.
