Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

109 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Defence the amount of money re-invested in the Defence Forces from the sale of Army barracks to date; the total income generated from the sale of barracks; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4650/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 44 and 109 together.

Financial agreements have been reached in relation to the disposal of Castleblayney and Fermoy Barracks and the legal formalities require to be completed. The receipt of income will follow completion of the sales agreements. Plans for the disposal of the remaining barracks at Ballincollig, Naas, Kildare and Clancy are at an advanced stage and it is hoped to have these sales completed during 2000. It is expected that up to £50 million will be realised from the sale of the six barracks identified for disposal and I will be seeking to ensure that the proceeds will be re-invested in full in the Defence Forces.

A special barrack re-investment building programme has been commenced and expenditure in 1999 in this area amounted to about £2.5 million. Expenditure for 2000 is estimated at £13 million and for 2001 at £27 million.
