Question:

100 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the number of arrests made of fishing vessels in 1999 with the involvement of the Naval Service; the number of resulting prosecutions; the number and value of fines levied; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4783/00]

Some 31 detentions of sea fishing vessels were carried out by the Naval Service in 1999 resulting in 22 convictions for fishery offences to date. The penalties imposed ranged from £75 to £137,365, realising a total of £548,501.

Three of the vessels detained were issued with official warnings and one was released without charge. Court proceedings are still pending in respect of five cases.
