Vol. 515 No. 1

Written Answers. - Vaccination Programme.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

153 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Health and Children the discussions, if any, he has had with general practitioners with regard to the introduction of the meningitis C vaccine into the immunisation programme; his views on whether they will agree to implement the vaccine; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5367/00]

The health board group, set up at my Department's request to plan the introduction of the group C vaccine, has had informal discussions with the Irish Medical Organisation about general practitioners' involvement in the delivery arrangements. It is expected that general practitioners will have a significant role in the delivery of this vaccine, particularly to infants and pre-school children. I have no reason to believe that they will not wish to be involved on this basis and my Department has asked the Health Service Employers Agency to convene formal discussions on the matter with general practitioners' representatives.
