Vol. 515 No. 1

Written Answers. - Swimming Pool Projects.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

205 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the position regarding the proposed swimming pool for Ballybofey and Stranorlar, County Donegal. [5417/00]

There are 13 proposals to build new swimming pools in my Department at present, including one for Ballybofey-Stranorlar, which was submitted by Donegal County Council. Grant expenditure for 2000 is already committed to pools in Ennis, Wicklow and Navan where work is under way and to a new pool in Dundalk, which is at an advanced stage of planning. Prior to approving funding for additional new pools, all current proposals will be examined this year, giving consideration to such matters as the need for a swimming pool in an area; suitability of the proposed site; future viability of the project, particularly in relation to operational and maintenance issues; construction and operating standards of existing facilities; satisfactory financial plan; the need to achieve an equitable geographical spread of funds; and having regard to the availability of funding for new swimming pools.

Question:

206 Mr. Burke asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the plans, if any, he has to grant aid a local committee (details supplied) for the provision of a swimming pool in view of the fact a site has been acquired and paid for and substantial local funding raised; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5428/00]

There are 13 proposals to build new swimming pools in my Department at present, including one for Loughrea, which was submitted by Galway County Council, on behalf of Loughrea Swimming Pool Company Limited. Grant expenditure for new pools in 2000 is already committed to pools in Ennis, Wicklow and Navan where work is under way and to a new pool in Dundalk, which is at an advanced stage of planning. Prior to approving further new pools, all current proposals will be examined this year, giving consideration to such matters as the need for a swimming pool in an area; suitability of the proposed site; future viability of the project, particularly in relation to operational and maintenance issues; construction and operating standards of existing facilities; satisfactory financial plan; the need to achieve an equitable geographical spread of funds; and having regard to the availability of funding for new swimming pools.
