Vol. 515 No. 1

Written Answers. - Farmer Statistics.

Billy Timmins

Question:

22 Mr. Timmins asked the Taoiseach the estimated number of full and part-time farmers in each of the years ending 1979, 1989 and 1999; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5029/00]

The precise information requested by the Deputy is not available.

The CSO June agricultural survey collects data on the farm workforce and relevant data is available since 1980. Farmers are asked to classify whether farmwork is their sole occupation; major occupation or subsidiary occupation.

In the table I am circulating, farmers who indicated that farmwork was their sole occupation have been classified as full-time farmers, while those in the other two categories have been treated as part-time farmers.
