Question:

103 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the proposals, if any, he has to protect the coastal area from Connigar to Baile na nGall, County Waterford, from erosion; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5692/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 102 and 103 together.

Under the Operational Programme for Environmental Services 1994-1999 grant aid of some £200,000 was made available to Waterford County Council in 1996 and 1997 towards coast protection schemes at Cunnigar and Tramore costing £266,164.

Last year my Department received from the county council a consultancy study on further protection requirements at those locations, and the local authority has recently put forward a proposal for development works based on the study. The options and funding needs for coast protection works at Tramore and Cunnigar will be assessed in the context of the multiannual coastal protection programme, which will be informed by evaluations of strategic coastal protection priorities, costings and funding available.

Question:

104 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if grant aid will be made available in 2000 to complete the coastal erosion remedial works at Lynns, Annagassan, Dunleer, County Louth; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5693/00]

Under the coast protection programme, £167,000 was provided to Louth County Council between 1996 and 1998 for coast protection works at Annagassan. Following the completion of this scheme in 1998, Louth County Council advised that an extension of the coast protection scheme northwards would be required. Further funding of £15,000 was provided to the county council in 1999 to undertake design and evaluation work for the proposed further coast protection scheme.

The funding requirements of the next phase of works at Annagassan are being assessed under the coast protection programme for 2000, which is being finalised at present.
