Vol. 515 No. 3

Written Answers. - Car Test Facilities.

Beverley Flynn

Question:

239 Ms Cooper-Flynn asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if adequate car test facilities will be located in County Mayo in view of the fact the two permanent test centres of Westport and Ballina mean that people in the north Mayo area have to travel in excess of 30 miles to a test centre; and if this is in contravention of the guidelines. [6197/00]

Services are provided by National Car Testing Service (NCTS) Limited in accordance with the tender submitted by the company and the contract signed with the Minister for the Environment and Local Government. Testing is carried out at 43 centres countrywide, including three mobile centres. Each test centre is located within 30 minutes of 90% of the car owners served by it.

In addition to the level of service provided for in the contract, NCTS may be prepared, at the request of and in co-operation with local authorities, to provide a number of additional mobile centres in remote areas.
