Vol. 515 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Drugs Unit.

Brendan Smith

Question:

295 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the proposals, if any, he has to establish a Garda drugs unit in the Cavan and Monaghan district; if gardaí will be assigned to these duties in other stations in the district; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6141/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a Garda drugs unit has already been established in the Cavan-Monaghan division. The following personnel have been assigned to the exclusive enforcement of misuse of drugs legislation: Monaghan, one detective sergeant and five gardaí; Cavan, three gardaí.

In addition, one garda with dedicated drugs law enforcement duties is being assigned to each of the following Garda stations: Carrickmacross, Bailieboro and Ballyconnell.
