Vol. 515 No. 3

Written Answers. - Coroner Service.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

298 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when the committee appointed to examine the Coroners Act, 1962, will report; the proposals, if any, he has to bring forward a new coroners Act; if so, the timeframe in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6145/00]

In December 1998 the Government approved my proposals to establish a working group to undertake a comprehensive review of the coroner service. Throughout 1999, the group has examined all aspects of the service, including the Coroners Act, 1962. Sixteen plenary meetings have been held and the group will shortly be concluding its deliberations. I expect to have its final report within the next few months.

I can assure the Deputy that the report of the group will, on its receipt, be examined by Government as quickly as possible. When I have particular legislative proposals, I will bring them to the Government for approval and have them published in the normal way.
