Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Ulick Burke

Question:

94 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Finance the progress, if any, made by his Department and the other bodies and groups in the working group appointed to draw up plans to implement the flood alleviation programme agreed at the meeting in Gort, County Galway; the further studies or reports, if any, to allow the works to proceed which have been furnished; if not, when they will be completed in view of the fact that assurances were given that no further delays would be acceptable; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6402/00]

The steering group which I established to look into means of alleviating the flooding problems in the south Galway area has considered and positively identified a number of schemes for further investigation and implementation. It has also been possible through a public consultation process, which the steering group initiated, to obtain suggestions from the general public as to how the monies provided might be utilised to the best advantage of the community in the south Galway area and the submissions received will be brought to the steering group for deliberation.

Those schemes identified are now being examined from an engineering, ecological and economic viewpoint by the consulting engineers appointed to advise and to prepare the scheme proposals necessary for public exhibition and implementation at the earliest practicable opportunity.
