Vol. 516 No. 2

Written Answers. - Cancer Treatment Services.

Michael Ring

Question:

113 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children the proposals, if any, he has for the future development of the breast clinic services at Mayo General Hospital; the number of staff employed in this clinic; and the plans, if any, he has to increase this number. [7324/00]

I understand from the Western Health Board that there are three consultant general surgeons at Mayo General Hospital who have training in respect of breast cancer services. I understand the hospital provides a specialist breast clinic twice a month.

The development of symptomatic breast cancer treatment services nationally is presently being considered by the National Cancer Forum having regard to internationally recognised best practice.

The forum's recommendations are currently awaited.
