Vol. 516 No. 2

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Question:

126 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the action, if any, he will take to have the serious and ongoing problem of pollution curbed in the coastal area of Howth and Sutton where sewage is currently on the beaches particularly from St. Fintan's Church in Sutton to Red Rock on Strand Road; the further action, if any, he will take in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7294/00]

I understand from Fingal County Council that the council is unaware of sewage pollution of the beaches concerned. As part of the Dublin Bay project, waste water from the Howth, Sutton, Baldoyle and Portmarnock areas, currently discharged to sea from the Nose of Howth, will be transferred to a new treatment plant in Ringsend via a pumping station in Sutton and submarine pipeline. The Dublin Bay project is being advanced as rapidly as possible.
