Vol. 516 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Security Procedures.

Ivor Callely

Question:

142 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education and Science further to Parliamentary Question No. 213 of 1 December 1999, the funding, if any, available to schools to put appropriate security procedures and safeguards in place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7303/00]

In the case of new schools, design teams are asked to ensure that security considerations are reflected in the architectural planning of the building, particularly in relation to access and relevant costs would be included in the overall tender price for the building project. Other cases are considered by my Department on an individual basis.

Funding for these activities is provided from within the annual capital allocation which is £81 million for primary schools and £100 million for post-primary schools in year 2000.
