Vol. 516 No. 4

Written Answers. - Aquaculture Development.

P. J. Sheehan

Question:

43 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources his Department's policy on the aquaculture and mariculture industry under the National Development Plan 2000-2006; and if he will ensure that proper expansion and utilisation of this valuable industry will not be taken over by one particular species, such as rope mussels, and will preserve and foster the natural breeding grounds for other native species. [7901/00]

In line with the Government's commitment to the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry, balanced development of the sector over the period of the National Development Plan 2000-06 will be supported having due regard for environmental considerations and all existing and traditional users of the resource.

A new strategic framework for aquaculture development is being finalised in partnership with the industry and will be published shortly. The key objectives for the sector are to build a critical mass in the production of salmon, trout, rope and bottom cultivated mussels and oysters; to promote the diversification of the sector into the production of new species consistent with market opportunities and to promote the introduction of new technology; to improve infrastructural support for the sector; and to support quality assurance and best environmental practice for both finfish and shellfish producers.
