Vol. 516 No. 5

Written Answers. - Court Accommodation.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

244 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the proposals, if any, he has to improve Cahir courthouse; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8538/00]

The Courts Service now has responsibility for the provision and maintenance of courthouses.

I have been informed by the Courts Service that it is preparing a five to seven year building programme to provide modern court facilities throughout the country. I understand that it is intended to refurbish buildings on a priority basis, for example, those buildings which are in most use and with the heaviest caseloads will receive attention first.

I understand that the court facilities in Cahir are provided in a building in the main square which also accommodates the local library and the area office of Tipperary South Riding County Council. I am informed that discussions have taken place with Tipperary South Riding County Council with a view to upgrading the building, including the court facilities. It is not possible to say at this stage when improvement work will be undertaken.
