Vol. 516 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cycling Promotion.

Question:

264 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the steps, if any, his Department has taken to encourage members of staff to cycle to work; and if he will consider a cycling allowance to promote cycling. [8637/00]

My Department has offices in Dublin, Athlone, Tullamore and other regional locations. The travel requirements of staff members vary according to circumstances and location.

In accordance with Civil Service regulations allowances are not paid to civil servants in respect of expenses incurred in travelling between home and their headquarters. The payment of a cycling allowance to civil servants to encourage them to cycle to work would be a matter for the Minister for Finance in the first instance.
