Vol. 516 No. 5

Written Answers. - Iranian Reform.

Monica Barnes

Question:

33 Mrs. Barnes asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement on the situation in Iran following the recent parliamentary elections there. [8306/00]

The Government welcomes the trend in favour of reform and modernisation in Iran reflected in the results of the recent parliamentary elections. Though the full extent of the outcome is not yet clear, as run-off elections must still be held next month, the substantial public mandate for genuine change by the people of Iran will clearly strengthen President Khatami's position, and assist him in overcoming opposition to his efforts to advance the programme of reforms.

The Government support the European Union's dialogue with Iran. Continued movement in the direction of reform will result in a further improvement in Iran's relations with the rest of the international community.
