Question:

287 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Health and Children the amount paid in compensation claims by his Department in 1999; and the heading under which payments were made. [8901/00]

I wish to inform the Deputy that my Department paid a total of £50,080 in compensation claims, general damages, during 1999. Payment was made under the heading legal costs and settlements.

I would also like to inform the Deputy that my Department provides a service to the Hepatitis C Compensation Tribunal by issuing payable orders in respect of the costs, including awards, associated with the tribunal. The following amounts were paid during 1999 on behalf of the Hepatitis C Compensation Tribunal: awards; £34,039,312.39 in respect of 214 awards and reparation fund; £7,032,055.11 in respect of 220 payments.
