Question:

131 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Defence if he has received a report from the Irish representative at a recent International Red Cross conference; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8810/00]

The 27th Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent was held in Geneva from 31 October to 6 November 1999. The Government was represented at the conference and general assembly by the permanent representative of Ireland to the United Nations in Geneva and by a senior official of my Department who is a Government nominee on the central council of the Irish Red Cross. The chairman and the secretary general of the Irish Red Cross also attended.

The conference discussed and agreed the promotion and implementation of humanitarian action appropriate for the challenges of the new millennium. The report of the conference will be available during this year.
