Vol. 516 No. 6

Written Answers. - Decentralisation Policy.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

144 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Defence the proposals, if any, he has for the decentralisation of departmental staff or bodies operating under the aegis of his Department; the proposed locations; the numbers involved; the consultation, if any, there will be with staff concerned; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8796/00]

The Deputy will be aware that the finance branch of my Department was decentralised to Galway in 1989. In the context of the White Paper on Defence, the Government decided to decentralise the Civil Defence branch of my Department to Roscrea, County Tipperary. The total number of posts in the Civil Defence branch is 32.

It has also been decided that two sections of Defence Forces Headquarters, namely the Directorate of Training and the Directorate of Reserve Forces, comprising approximately 30 personnel, will be relocated from Dublin to Kickham Barracks, Clonmel, County Tipperary.

Staff unions/associations have been informed of these decisions and detailed discussions will take place with the unions/associations as necessary.
