Vol. 517 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

David Stanton

Question:

283 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the supports, if any, available to visually impaired students attending second level schools; the way these supports can be accessed; the improvements planned; and if she will make a statement on the number of persons involved and amounts spent in the past year. [9716/00]

My Department allocates additional teaching resources to second level schools to cater for the educational needs of visually impaired students. Applications are submitted by the authorities of the individual schools at which the students attend. The applications are referred to the psychological service for a report and recommendation. Each case is considered on its individual merits.

Visually impaired students also have access to the visiting teacher service for children with certain disabilities. The visiting teacher service provides support for the children in question and their families and also advises schools on best ways of meeting their special learning needs.

My Department operates a scheme for the provision of grants for second-level schools towards the purchase of equipment for the use of pupils with certain disabilities or communication difficulties, including visual impairment. The purpose of the scheme is to provide such pupils with equipment of direct educational benefit to them. Computer equipment and software are items that may be provided. Under the terms of the scheme the school authorities make an application in respect of an individual pupil. The equipment remains the property of the school.

The supports provided to visually impaired students will be kept under review in the context of available resources.

I will arrange to have the details sought by the Deputy sent on, as soon as possible.
