Vol. 517 No. 6

Written Answers. - Obstetric and Gynaecology Services.

Bernard Allen

Question:

250 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has received communication from the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists that it will no longer recognise two person units for training as a result of recent hospital inspections; and the implications this decision has for the organisation of obstetric and gynaecology services. [10642/00]

My Department has not received any direct communication from the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in relation to recognition of units for training purposes.

Comhairle na n-Ospidéal is the statutory body responsible for regulating the number and type of appointments of consultant medical staffs and such other officers or staffs may be prescribed in hospitals engaged in the provision of services.

I understand the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has been in discussion with comhairle on the implications of the approach proposed by the institute in relation to arrangements for the recognition of obstetric units for training purposes. I have been advised that comhairle has raised a number of issues with the institute and on receipt of its response comhairle will consider the proposal further.
