Vol. 518 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Monuments.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

155 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if her attention has been drawn to the fact that shale quarrying, involving two-tonne trucks, is taking place two fields or 500 meters away from the national monument of the Monasterboice Tower and Celtic Cross in the townland of Monasterboice, County Louth; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11042/00]

I wish to advise the Deputy that my officials are aware that works are being undertaken in the vicinity of Monasterboice Tower and Celtic Cross, both of which are national monuments. The cemetery in which the monuments are located is in the care of Louth County Council but the monuments themselves are both in the care of my Department. The impact of activities close to these national monuments is at present being assessed by my officials, in consultation with Louth County Council.
