Vol. 518 No. 1

Written Answers. - Maritime Museum.

John Perry

Question:

64 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the position regarding development of a Sligo based maritime museum arising from salvage and archaeological excavation of Armada wrecks off the Sligo coast; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10940/00]

I have no plans to develop a maritime museum in Sligo. However, in the event of a county museum being established in the Sligo area, should a request be received to display items in the care of the National Museum that come from Armada wrecks located around the coasts near Sligo, it would be favourably considered by the National Museum of Ireland having regard to the loan policy of the museum and to section 68 of the National Cultural Institutions Act, 1997.
