Vol. 518 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Pat Carey

Question:

150 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will examine the needs of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11 regarding her son's educational needs, including the provision of a special needs class or other additional teaching resource for the school involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11267/00]

I have asked my Department's inspectorate to investigate the special educational needs of the child referred to by the Deputy, with a view to the provision of appropriate educational services.

As soon as the inspector's report is received and considered, my Department will be in touch with the school authorities.

Question:

151 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will be able to assist a group of parents and children with autism in the provision of classroom and other spaces for their children for the school year beginning September 2000 in view of the fact they have been unable to identify a suitable location; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11268/00]

I can assure the Deputy that my Department is most anxious to assist parents of children with autism in the provision of school accommodation and appropriate educational services to meet their children's special needs.

If the Deputy will provide me with details of the children in question, I will arrange to have the matter investigated by my Department's inspectorate.
