Richard Bruton

Question:

277 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if the Higher Education Authority recently submitted a report on the proposals to establish a centre for deaf studies in Trinity College, Dublin; if so, if he will lay this report in the Oireachtas Library; and if he will proceed with this proposal. [11375/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 276 and 277 together.

Following its consultation with various interests in the field, the Higher Education Authority has recently submitted a report to my Department on the proposal to establish a centre for deaf studies in Trinity College, Dublin. The Authority concludes that there is a strong case for the establishment of the centre. I am favourably disposed to such a centre. However, a number of practical issues need further clarification and I have asked my officials to liaise with the authority in this regard. I will arrange to have the report laid in the Oireachtas Library in due course, following its full consideration in my Department.
