Vol. 518 No. 4

Written Answers. - Port Development.

David Andrews

Question:

141 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the derelict condition of the Carlisle pier; the plans, if any, he has for its future; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11914/00]

Since it was corporatised on 3 March 1997, Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company has been statutorily responsible for the management, control, direction and development of the harbour and its environs within jurisdictional limits.

I am advised that the board of the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company is currently looking at a number of different options for the redevelopment of the Carlisle Pier. No final decision has, however, been made at this time.

Question:

142 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the plans, if any, he has for the development of Dún Laoghaire harbour and marina; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11915/00]

Since it was corporatised on the 3 March 1997 Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company has been statutorily responsible for the management, control, direction and development of the harbour and its environs within jurisdictional limits.

As the Deputy may be aware, the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company has received planning permission from Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and the statutory foreshore licence from my Department for the development of a marina scheme incorporating permanent breakwaters. I am advised by the harbour company that, following a tendering process last year, a contract was awarded to Marina Marketing and Management Limited to build and run the marina facility.

My Department has provided a £3 million injection of equity into the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company to assist this project. In addition a sum of £850,000 in grant aid was secured from the Ireland Wales Maritime INTERREG Community Initiative towards the construction of the necessary breakwaters.

I understand from the harbour company that dredging and construction of the new marina commenced in February of this year and that the new 680 berth marina is scheduled to open in March 2001.
