Vol. 518 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tax Rebates.

Noel Ahern

Question:

161 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance the procedures for old age pensioners to reclaim DIRT paid by them on deposit accounts when they are covered by the income tax exemption levels. [11940/00]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the procedures for old age pensioners to reclaim DIRT paid by them on deposit accounts is as follows.

An individual who is over 65 years or whose spouse is over 65 years or who is permanently incapacitated and whose total income, including deposit interest, is below the exemption limit may claim a refund of DIRT. In the case of a married couple their combined income must be below the exemption limit.

The exemption limits for the tax year 1999-2000 are:

Under 65(incapacitated)

65 or Over

Single or Widowed

£4,100

£6,500

Married Couple

£8,200

£13,000

A refund of DIRT may be claimed by completing Form 54D which is available from any tax office. I am arranging to have a copy of this form forwarded to the Deputy. The completed form should be sent to the individual's tax office with a certificate from the relevant bank, building society, An Post etc., showing the amount of deposit interest, the tax deducted, the net amount of interest paid and the date(s) of payment.
The tax office will calculate any refund due and make arrangements for repayment as appropriate.
