209 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the estimated cost in the current year of increasing the new housing grant to £7,000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12073/00]
The estimated cost in the current year of any increase in the amount of the new house grant would depend upon the date of introduction, terms etc. However, the full year cost of a new house grant of £7,000 based on the estimated number of new house grants to be paid in 2000 – 10,000 – would be £70 million, £40 million in excess of this year's estimates provision of £30 million.
