Vol. 518 No. 4

Written Answers. - Environment Protection.

John Gormley

Question:

220 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if her attention has been drawn to the fact that a person (details supplied) in County Offaly has been in contact with a person (details supplied) in the national parks and wildlife service in relation to the destruction of a well; the action Dúchas will take in relation to the destruction of the environment; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11896/00]

Minister for Arts; Heritage, Heritage; Gaeltacht and the Islands (Miss De Valera):

I can confirm that during work on a raised bog restoration project a natural spring well was accidentally damaged by our contractors. I understand that immediate efforts were made to restore the well and further works were carried out following consultation with the owners. However, as they still appear to have some concerns about the condition of the well it is proposed that the official who has been dealing with this issue will meet the owners when they are next in Ireland to examine what needs to be done. My Department will be writing to the owners accordingly.
