Vol. 518 No. 6

Written Answers. - Environmental Impact Study.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

445 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if her attention has been drawn to the archaeological value of the Baltransna-Fleenstown area near Ashbourne, County Meath, earmarked as part of the N2 realignment; and the plans, if any, she has to contact the Department of the Environment and Local Government on her views on this road proposal. [12536/00]

I understand that an EIS is under preparation for this proposed realignment. The consultants commissioned for the project have been in contact with staff from my Department and have submitted a preliminary archaeological constraint study that included sites in the Baltrasna-Fleenstown area. Further information on possible archaeological sites in that area has been received by my Department and has been forwarded to the consultants for inclusion in the more detailed assessment being carried out for the EIS. Under normal procedures the completed EIS will be officially referred to my Department for comment and at that stage it will be possible to fully assess any impacts on the road scheme.
