Vol. 518 No. 6

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

526 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals, if any, he has to provide a school in the Rochestown area, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12377/00]

There are no immediate plans in my Department to provide a new primary school in Rochestown, County Cork. Traditionally, children from this area have attended primary schools in Ballinlough and Douglas. Extensions to schools in these areas have been either completed recently or are under way.

It was decided last year to provide a new school in the Grange-Frankfield area, adjacent to Rochestown. This school is due to open in temporary accommodation next September. While the new facility is intended to cater primarily for pupils from Grange-Frankfield, it is expected that some pupils from Rochestown will attend also.

My Department is aware of the substantial housing developments taking place in the southeastern suburbs of Cork city, including Rochestown. The situation is being monitored on an on-going basis, having regard to the capacity of existing schools to meet the overall needs of the area.
