Vol. 518 No. 6

Written Answers. - Coastal Protection.

Austin Deasy

Question:

101 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources his views on whether the present level of funding for coastal protection is adequate in view of the increase in the high level of tides due to global warming; and the studies, if any, his Department have undertaken on the issue. [9317/00]

The National Development Plan 2000-2006 provides for a significant increase in the level of funding available for coastal protection. Total expenditure over the period of the plan will be £35 million and will allow serious or urgent cases of coastal erosion to be addressed on a value for money basis through prioritised multi-annual works programmes.

The coastal protection works will be complemented by a focused programme of research which is intended to consider, inter alia, any implications for the future management of the coastal zone of the possible consequences of global warming.
