Vol. 519 No. 1

Written Answers. - Medical Cards.

Noel Ahern

Question:

133 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason a medical card does not cover the letter or form required from a general practitioner for the renewal of driving licences for persons over 70; and if a general practitioner can charge £20 for signing this form. [13227/00]

The general medical services scheme provides a treatment and curative service for medical card patients, including the provision of normal sickness certificates. The scheme does not extend to the issue of certificates relating to such matters as driving licences, insurance or assurance policies. Accordingly, a general practitioner may charge such fees for such certificates as he or she feels is reasonable. If an individual feels that he or she is being overcharged for any certificate, they should raise the matter with the general practitioner and seek an explanation for the charge.
