Vol. 519 No. 1

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Liam Aylward

Question:

155 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 605 of 21 March 2000, he will report on the progress which has since been made with regard to a persons (details supplied) in County Wexford, application for ESF maintenance grant. [13178/00]

The person to whom the Deputy refers applied to County Carlow Vocational Education Committee for grant assistance under the European Social Fund-aided third level courses maintenance grants scheme for trainees 1999 to pursue a certificate in business studies at Carlow Institute of Technology. In order to qualify for grant assistance under the ESF-aided third level maintenance grant scheme for trainees, a candidate must satisfy certain conditions pertaining to age, residence, means and nationality.

I understand from County Carlow VEC that there was a delay in processing the application in this case as the details relating to income originally submitted by the applicant required some clarification. On receipt of the additional information required, County Carlow VEC was in a position to confirm that the reckonable income in this case exceeds the current income limits for the award of a grant in respect of the 1999-2000 academic year. The candidate was subsequently informed that he is ineligible for grant assistance in respect of the current academic year.
