Vol. 519 No. 1

Written Answers. - Extradition Procedures.

Billy Timmins

Question:

43 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the efforts being made to extradite Irish nationals who are major figures involved in the drug trade operating from countries such as Holland and Spain and who have criminal records in this country. [13126/00]

My Department receives incoming extradition requests from other states through the diplomatic channel which it transmits to the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform and the Attorney General for ultimate decision by the former as to whether the request is to be acceded to. Outgoing extradition requests are submitted to the requested states via the diplomatic channel having been prepared by the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Chief State Solicitor or local State solicitor where appropriate and the Garda. While there are extradition arrangements in place between Ireland and the Netherlands and Spain, I am not in a position to comment on individual cases.
