Vol. 519 No. 2

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Question:

242 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the consideration he has given to a change in the tenant purchase scheme to allow tenants living in one bedroomed accommodation to make a purchase under the existing scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13294/00]

The current tenant purchase scheme provides for the sale to tenants of dwellings owned by local authorities, with the exception of houses provided for and occupied by elderly persons, many of which would be one bedroomed units of accommodation. It is an important aspect of housing policy, supported by successive Governments, to maintain and as far as possible increase the level of local authority accommodation available to elderly persons.
