Vol. 519 No. 2

Written Answers. - Computer Virus.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

76 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the information available to her on the extent of the damage to computers by the recent I love you e-mail computer virus; if any computer equipment within her Department or in any other Government Department was infected; and the steps being taken here and internationally to protect against the malicious transmissions of such computer viruses. [13403/00]

My Department has comprehensive security measures in place to protect our computer systems from viruses and other security threats. Due to the particularly swift passage of the "I love you" e-mail computer virus across the world, one machine in my Department was infected but this was easily quarantined and eliminated without any damage to our computer systems. The impact of the virus on other Departments and measures to guard against or discourage malicious transmissions of computer viruses are not functions of mine.
