Vol. 519 No. 2

Written Answers. - Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

John Bruton

Question:

129 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development his views on the way in which agriculture will contribute to reducing the 35% contribution it currently makes to Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions; if the greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture are proportionately as damaging to the global environment as the greenhouse gas emissions from the transport, domestic and energy sectors; and if he has satisfied himself with the scientific basis for the current assessment that agriculture contributes 35% to Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions. [13494/00]

My Department, along with other Departments, is currently engaged in finalising a draft national greenhouse gas abatement strategy for consideration by the Government. In the context of the negotiations, the points raised by the Deputy are being actively considered.
