Vol. 519 No. 3

Written Answers - Departmental Properties.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

85 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Defence the requests made to him for the use of army barracks by other Government departments; and the discussions taking place in relation to this. [13719/00]

Following a request from the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform to a number of Government Departments to meet the urgent need for the provision of accommodation for asylum seekers, I offered that Department the opportunity to inspect a number of Department of Defence properties to check out their feasibility or otherwise for the accommodation of asylum seekers.

Arising from these inspections arrangements are now under way for the provision of mobile home accommodation at Magee Barracks, Kildare and Ballymullen Barracks, Tralee.

The responsibility for the provision of accommodation for asylum seekers is primarily a matter for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform.
