Vol. 519 No. 5

Written Answers. - Seaside Resorts Scheme.

Joe Higgins

Question:

153 Mr. Higgins (Dublin West) asked the Minister for Finance the cost to the Exchequer of the seaside tax relief scheme at each of the 13 designated areas; the number of qualifying units; and the number of those units which were subject to an environmental impact assessment. [14427/00]

There are no comprehensive cost figures available in respect of individual resorts. However the tax cost of the scheme is provisionally estimated at £250 million to £300 million and it is expected that this figure will be revised upwards when all the developments eligible for relief under the scheme are taken into account for tax purposes. Similarly, there are no comprehensive figures as yet available on the number of qualifying units constructed or refurbished under the scheme.

Developments in the areas designated under the seaside resorts scheme are subject to the same planning requirements as other areas in the State and, where appropriate, certain developments could have been subject to an environmental impact assessment where the relevant planning regulations so specified. Consequently there are no specific records available on the number of developments in the resort areas that were subject to environmental impact assessment studies.
