Vol. 519 No. 5

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a notice under Standing Order 31 from Deputy Sargent. I now call on Deputy Sargent to raise the matter.

I wish to discuss the following matter of public importance under Standing Order 31, that the Dáil be suspended to allow the Government to explain its enthusiasm for the nomination of former Supreme Court judge, Mr. Hugh O'Flaherty, as Vice-President of the European Investment Bank; to answer whether he was the only nominee available to the Government for this prestigious and well-paid position; and to clarify whether the special legislation providing for Mr. O'Flaherty's pension is to be repealed.

Having considered the matter fully, the Ceann Comhairle does not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
