Vol. 519 No. 5

Written Answers. - Autism Services.

Johnny Brady

Question:

187 Mr. J. Brady asked the Minister for Health and Children the support available from his Department for a summer camp for the twelve children with autism attending the two special classes at Navan and the five children with autism in the community for whom a proposal has been made to run a summer camp at Scoil Mhuire at a cost of £8,000, in July 2000. [14133/00]

I understand from the North Eastern Health Board that a proposal for a summer camp in County Meath was jointly developed by the board and the Meath representatives of the North Eastern Autistic Support Group. The total revenue cost of the proposal is £8,000 which includes the employment of a co-ordinator.

I understand that the board's commitment is for £3,000 in addition to the input of the members of the autism core team – senior psychologist, senior speech and language therapist, medical social worker and senior occupational therapist. The autism core team will commit one week in preparation time and three weeks for the running of the activities of the camp in July 2000. As I have already stated this is a proposal developed in partnership with local representatives of the NEASG who are committing £5,000 for the project.
