Vol. 519 No. 5

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

191 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Health and Children the location of the stroke units in the North Eastern Health Board area; if there is access for patients in each county; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14186/00]

The North Eastern Health Board area has a wide range of services available on an out-patient/community basis, but does not have a dedicated stroke service available. Patients are generally accommodated in the acute hospital until a community discharge is possible, either to a nursing home or convalescent bed or home. The North Eastern Health Board has rehabilitation and assessment units at Dundalk and Cavan and is currently planning similar units in Drogheda and in Navan. These units are not specifically for stroke patients, but will have some such patients referred to the units.
